A Strategic Partnership

SDI Biocarbon Solutions produces renewable biocarbon to help decarbonize steel production and other applications where consistency and scale are essential. A wholly owned subsidiary of Steel Dynamics (SDI), one of the largest domestic steel producers and metals recyclers in North America, SDI Biocarbon Solutions was established to bring innovative biocarbon technology to commercial scale.

To do so, SDI Biocarbon Solutions collaborated with Aymium, a leading developer of renewable biocarbon and biohydrogen products that can replace fossil fuels in steelmaking and emerging applications. That collaboration allows SDI Biocarbon Solutions to deliver a reliable, high-quality renewable carbon source at the scale industrial customers require.

SDI Biocarbon is a collaboration between Steel Dynamics and Aymium

Our Facility and Process

Located in Columbus, Mississippi, near one of Steel Dynamics’ largest electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mills, SDI Biocarbon Solutions has been supplying high-quality biocarbon for SDI steel manufacturing operations since 2025.

Our facility is strategically located near plentiful fiberous raw material sources and in close proximity to key truck and rail routes, offering bulk loading capabilities and flexible shipping options.

SDI Biocarbon Solutions uses an advanced combustion-free thermochemical process to convert sustainably sourced biomass into high-purity biocarbon. This biomass is sourced from low-quality pulpwood from certified or non-controversial sources, including forest thinnings and fiber unsuitable for higher-value applications. Thinnings are a necessary part of responsible forest management, and pulpwood refers to the upper portion of a tree that is not suitable for lumber.
